MY BED

FROM A SEPTEMBER 1, 2023 NEWSLETTER:
I haven’t told you about my bed yet have I ? At the beginning of 2022 I figured out a plan to fully rearrange my apartment, but it all revolved around a very particular bed frame. So after years of picking up work / learning trades on queer construction sites around Philly I designed a project all by myself for the first time ever : my chaos princess bed :)

Sarah Smuvs and I spent the morning chopping and assembling the basics in deep January cold at Windowroom and then fixed the legs and headboard on in my apartment. All of a sudden it was a bed, and everything fit perfectly, and the space felt so ordered and together and just MADE SENSE ! It was … so cool ! And then, eventually, it just became regular. Dashi and I sleep on it everyday, whatever !

I bring it up now though because this private practice feels absolutely interdependent with whatever printed multiple product I end up selling at a market or public performance that I put together, and I take it very seriously ! If the cabinets are closed and the counter is clean, my drawings come out that much better. If I draw all morning, my afternoon adventure bike ride is that much more exciting. It’s all crucial and beautiful and necessary and above all else MY ART :) I recently discovered the Manifesto For Maintenance Art by Mierle Laderman Ukeles that is 100% surfing the same wave and I reaaallly love it !
